Note: These are rough, first-run maps of the Research Park MTB Trails. If you see something wrong or have any suggestions, please let me know. Do not depend on them to get you out of the woods!

These maps were created with a Garmin Rino 130 and GPS Visualizer. The background image is a USGS black and white aerial photo or a USGS topo maps. These images are old and out dated but all that was readily available. Hopefully, I can update them with more recent MSU aerial photography.

Click on any image below for a larger version. The larger version contains way point names. A key to the waypoint names is at the bottom of this page (as is our really cool ultimate goal).

Basic map with MTB Trails drawn in red.

MTB Trails are colored by elevation/altitude.

**There may be a GPS calibration issue at the ERC trailhead. I don't believe the elevation drops from 123 m to 100 m (purple to green) that quickly.

GPS data was collected over 12 tracks. These individual tracks are color mapped.

** Does anyone know if there are already established "trail names"? These tracks can easily be combined or separated and labeled as trails, which would allow for easier discussion/reference.

This is exactly the same as the above map - except three additional tracks are included (Track 97-99 colored blue and purple). When gathering data, it seemed as though a trail might be here (i.e., I was able to walk for a little bit), but then it seemed to dead-end. Does anyone know if a trail should be at these three tracks?

Trouble deciphering my waypoint names?
Numbering was used for unique waypoint names.

BRDG = bridge

TRHD = trailhead/Entrance

BRDWK = boardwalk

OVRLK = overlook (don't fall!!!)

WAVE_BRDG = wave bridge

NF = North Farm entrance/exit

RAMP = freestyle ramp

CUTLOG = a place where were a path has been cut in a fallen log

LOGJMP = a fallen log is on the path; jump it.

MUD = a really muddy, swampy area

We like to bike and we want maps so we don't get lost!
Unfortunately, there are limited cycling maps (especially MTB maps). And it's a pain to keep up with all the paper ones anyway...

This is our first attempt to make maps for our Garmin GPS units. So far, we've loaded the tracks and waypoints, and been able to add other map features such as the CAVS and ERC buildings (albeit, not to scale). Check out the three GPS unit snapshots below: the airplane symbols indicates the two freestyle ramps and the walkers are a trailheads.

(sorry - these three do not get bigger)

We used GPSMapEdit to draw our maps.
